Britta Fluevog Artist Residency

The Britta Fluevog Artist Residency is accepting artists for the 2018-2019 year. Located in a large house in Braunschweig Germany. Braunschwieg is an easy distance by train to Berlin and also home to Germany’s largest art school. This semi-rural/suburban residency is excellent for those who wish to have a quiet period in which to focus on their art. Lakes, horses, farms and a forest with impressively old oaks are all within the immediate vicinity.

The residency is located on the top floor of the house, the low ceilinged bedroom and adjacent studio will be available to resident artists.  Featuring lots of natural light, textured white walls, a sink and a view, the studio is good contemplative spare for creating art. The residency is open to visual, media, craft, curators, writers and those somewhere between these practices. There may be an opportunity for hosting an exhibition for residency participants.

Artists in residence also have access to the rest of the shared living house, which contains a large living room, kitchen, fireplace, sauna and garden.

Residencies are open from between one week and two months. The cost is 150€ per week or €450 per month.

FAQ’s

Can groups apply? Yes, artist(s) will share the studio and there is the possibility to rent an extra bed-room.

Is the residency child friendly? There is a baby that lives here, other children are allowed, though there are no special provisions for them.  Please contact us to ensure this will be a good situation for your family.

Is there an exhaust system?  No, ventilation is provided by the windows, which can be comfortably open around half of the year.

Are there any restrictions on mediums? It is possible to line the floor with plastic or paper, but any really messy mediums or consistently loud art practices would not be a good fit for this space.

Is there internet? There is fast internet via wifi and LAN in the house. Downloading of illegal material is strictly forbidden.

Are there tools? There are some basic tools including screwdrivers, pliers, drill and jig saw for mental/wood/plastic. There is some space for building small projects/ using tools in the garage.

What is available for artists to use? In the basement is a full weaving studio. There is the possibility of access to a loom and use to textile tools, please ask for further details. There is also a full library of weaving, craft and theory books.

Is there any artist supports? There is some minimal artist support available. Artists will mostly need to be self-sufficient. Britta Fluevog has her studio in the basement and will be happy to have weekly (or more) studio visits with you and help you find your way around town and local art stores.

Are collaborations welcome? Britta Fluevog has her textile but not her ceramics studio set up. Should you wish to collaborate, please contact her.

Is anything extra required of the artist? Artists have the responsibility to clean their own areas. They must also ensure that rooms are returned to their original state after residency.

How does food work? There are grocery stores/ bakeries within walking distance that sell prepared food and there is access to a shared kitchen within the house.

Is there transportation? There are buses into downtown and the main train station. They leave every half hour to either location. It is also a great city for cycling, with car-free routes and lots of bike lanes beside sidewalks. Downtown is about a 20 minute cycle.
