Bio

Estonian-Canadian Britta Fluevog is a third-generation-matriarchal artist living in Jülich Germany. Fluevog’s MFA was completed at Emily Carr University in 2015. In 2007, Fluevog received her BFA from NSCAD University. In 2007 she established a small ceramic co-op in Ghana, West Africa.

Britta Fluevog’s work brings a strong aesthetic and material-based practice into the realm of social justice. She use weaving, ceramics, performativity and process as manifestations to expand the discourses of textiles and political art. The works of contemporary artists such as Lisa Anne Auerbach, Sara Rahbar, Tanya Aguiñiga, and Tanja Boukal, which are politically radical, influence her practice.

Through the lens of social justice and intersectionality, Fluevog’s work investigates borders, refugees, globalism and capitalism in relation to textiles and makers. Touch, texture and the handmade are explored in relationship to the maker and the performance of making. Local, industrial, and indigenous materials are explored within her work. Her ongoing interest in borders, refugees and migrants is connected to her maternal grandparents who fled Estonia when the USSR stole the country.

Organic shapes, texture, and a plethora of details in the work allow meandering investigations by the viewer and creates art that continually changes. Strong aesthetic and decorative elements in the work are employed to subvert traditional occidental devaluation of these elements particularly in relation to craft materials and women’s work. Through connection to materials and ancient practices, Fluevog aims to challenge global hegemonic capitalism, championing the value of makers.

Installed at GCBC for the Easter Period. The idea was from the Stump of Jesse that had adorned the church during the christmas season.

Chaos Series

Everything has order, precise lines, laws, laws, order and purpose. Order is what allows our world to exist, it established and maintains equilibriums. But it is chaos that drives and changes our world; evolution requires chaos to move forward. My Chaos series is a celebration, expression, and inquiry into chaos. It also explores quantum mechanics theory (whereby the act of watching changed the movement of electrons) and how inanimate objects have a spiritual or self-knowledge side to them and how our relationships, as people, with these inanimate objects affects them. My pieces seek to create chaos out of order, disequilibrium, dynamism, uncertainties, joy, explosion and change.

    Tangled                             A Morel or Something
     2008                                           2008

My piece Tangled, from my
Black wool, Rusty Metal Series was the inspiration for my Chaos Series. It
started with two works on the Fairy Tale Warp, Faerie & A Morel or Something. While making A Morel or Something, I created and worked out my theories on chaos. I also established some guides which most of the following works would follow: technical chaos, having very loose weft concurrently very tight weft; and having my chaos involve colour/ a sense of joy.

Waffle Weave

This piece is dealing with industrial and domestic spheres. It takes weaving out of the feminine, the domestic environment and brings it into the masculine and industrial world. It takes something that is soft, nurturing and personal and turns it into something hard, aloof, unapproachable and massive.  It also takes something industrial, that is hard, not aesthetically thought of as beautiful and that is usually used with machines and turning it into something full of personality, handmade and softened.  The weave structure is important to this piece as waffle weaves are used to create a 3-d structure. When the waffle weave is used for aesthetical purposes, often thicker yarn is used at the front and thinner yarn is used at the back to create further depth. Metal cable and chain is deal for this structure was is accentuates the depth and uses the thickness to its best advantage.

The hand-loom becomes apart of the final product

The work was held together with zap straps (cable tie) so allow for assemblage. These were kept as apart of the final artwork.
